A phone named desire

HTC's updated model looks the same as its predecessor but comes in a bit cheaper

This year HTC updated its mid-range phone with the Desire 816G. Similar to the way Apple developed the iPhone 5 and 5s, the 816G exterior is the same as last year's Desire 816. This is basically 2015's revised version to keep up with other brands.

The phone has a 5.5-inch screen perfect for movie-watching, gaming or just everyday use. On the side lie HTC's signature dual stereo speakers.

However, the 816G is faster and cheaper than its predecessor. HTC has added more CPU cores into this model. The result is a smartphone that goes about its business in a timely fashion — opening and closing apps is a pretty speedy affair, as is flicking your way around the home screen and app lists.

Benchmark apps are beneficial additions. Another added feature is a dual nano-SIM slot support for balancing both work and play in one phone.

The 8GB of storage it comes with fills up quickly, but users can boost the space on the device by up to 32GB a time. The 5MP front camera deserves a special mention here, simply because it is a selfie-lover's delight. The absence of 4G support and smaller RAM size is what makes the phone more affordable.

At 2,500 baht cheaper than last year, it will attract more buyers but that comes at a price. Smaller RAM means your phone won't support the new software. No 4G support is fine, for the present, but better specs means you can prolong the purchase of your next phone.

The HTC 816G comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Here comes the fun part: this phone originally comes with Chinese as the language system. The device uses its own AppMarket (instead of Play Store), which has its own app collection. This totally confused me when I set up the device and was trying to find apps to write this review.

This phone is a renewed version of last year's 816: it maintains the same big-screen display and fast performance. Having almost the same features while cheaper at 7,990 baht, if you loved last year's 816 design and are looking for a good mid-range dual-SIM phone, this is maybe the model for you.
